About
Professional Life
My professional life comprises a portfolio of the following:
I am a Leadership Coach, Trainer and Consultant with Top Performers;
I am Principal Consultant - Applications with Jireh Consulting Services - we specialise in JD Edwards (JDE), an Oracle application;
- I am a freelance Project Manager.
Prior to moving into business consulting in 2000 I spent the 1990s as an accountant advising entrepreneurs, with an increasing focus on systems accounting. You can connect with me professionally through LinkedIn.
Writing and Photography
On my Blog I write about things of interest to me. Generally these relate to at least one of my four main topics: Effectiveness, Technology, Politics and Christianity - but often something that interests me does so because it covers more than one of those topcis. I target writing at least one substantive article per week, often with a New Zealand focus. The Blog has a dedicated Twitter feed "GavinKnightBlog".
I am active on my personal Twitter "GavinKnight" - a daily collation is posted here under Short Thoughts.
I share articles I find interesting through a dedicated Twitter feed "GavinKnightRead" - a daily collation is posted here under Shared Reading.
I share my best photos here under Photography.
Family
I have been very happily married to Jill since 1990. We have a teenage daughter (Andrea) and son (Joel). We have a lot of fun enjoying each other, our extended family (most of whom live in Wellington), our church (we were part of the team which started it), our friends, our home, our city Wellington (where I have always lived) and travel.
Effectiveness
I have a growing interest in Effectiveness, particularly as represented by David Allen's "Getting Things Done", from a number of perspectives: personal effectiveness, team effectiveness and organisational effectiveness.
Technology
My interest in writing about technology is more in terms of personal technology. I'm a gadget geek! I'm also quite intrigued by Web 2.0, social media and new media.
Politics
My interest in politics is an expression of my interest in current affairs and the wider world, and is heavily influenced by my christian faith.
I score centre (-0.12) and mildly libertarian (-2.05) on the Political Compass (take the test on Facebook). I generally feel more 'right' than 'left', so was a little surprised by that - but I probably came out more towards the centre due to my christianity induced feeling of responsibility for others, particularly the vulnerable.
I am not a member of a political party.
Christianity
Although I have attended church since birth my faith didn't become personal until my late teens. My christian faith is very important to me and now goes to the heart of who I am. My intention is that my faith informs everything I do, but the simple frustrating reality is that I don't always live up to that ideal.
I have been an active member of our local church The Salvation Army Johnsonville since I led the team which started it in the mid 1990s. I have served in various capacities on our church leadership team almost continuously since then. My current leadership role is to ensure social justice is an active strategic theme.
Prior to starting SAJ I had been active at the SA Wellington South in Newtown into which I was born, where my extended family has a long association, and my parents are still active members. I served in various leadership roles from the late 1980s until the mid 1990s when I left to start SAJ.
